The he-wolf nudged the she awake. She blinked and shook her head hard. There had been dreams…dreams of a man-place, a man-den, with that man-thing with burning eyes in it, and a woman-thing. A woman-thing, who held a thing that she pulled at with her paws so that it made bird-sounds, and she made bird-sounds with her mouth. The man-thing had gone to sleep. The woman-thing had pulled a skin over him and watched him sleep.

It had weighted the she-wolf with such grief that it made a huge ache in her belly. There was something there—something she should know—and something she had lost. She whimpered deep in her throat and tried to hold the images.

But they vanished, and when the he-wolf went out and came back with a rabbit, the warm, luscious scent of it drove the images out of her mind.

But somehow, not the grief from her belly.

The he-wolf seemed to sense it, and licked her muzzle and eyes gently. Outside, the Hunt bayed in the far distance, and the she-wolf cringed.
